Winter - (suite) - Frost . Running Brook . Mist -  4’
Commission: Pamela Burch

This suite of three pieces was commissioned, again, for someone’s birthday. As the month of the birthday was November, I decided upon “winter” as the theme.

Winter

- An ice and frost grips all in winter beauty - a frosted world.

This tiny one-page miniature again uses the treble, silvery quality of the piano to portray the delicate, icy-ness of frost.......

The Running Brook

-  Running and splashing by the frosted rocks  -  with water clear, like shining crystal glass.

The running brook is represented by a repeated quaver pattern, over the top of which the right hand plays a light and slightly varied motive, with occasional semiquavers, like little splashes of water....

Mist

-  Gently rolling over the early winter fields, through barely leaf-clad trees across a landscape ploughed  -

This whole movement has a soft and gentle dreamy quality, helped by the sustaining pedal being held across several bars at a time as well as lots of added 7ths within the harmony.
